AS an email marketer, everyone goes through the 3 types.

You see as a newbie, you’re taught that the money is in your email list. It’s an old and common saying.
It all starts the day you build your first subscriber.
The excitement overwhelms you and you remember seeing how your favorite marketer emailed you an offer and had you buy a product.
And you know when you purchased that product, he or she was paid a commission for your order.
And now that you have your first subscriber, you’re READY to do the same…
First I’ll break them down, then I’ll explain which may be the right move for you.
Disclaimer: This article is not intended to offend anyone, it’s an opinion of mine based on observations I’ve had over the past 8 years.  And in full transparency, I’ve been all 3 of these types of email marketers. I share this article to help share the knowledge. Neither of these 3 are the “wrong” way to be as a marketer. It’s your business and your approach is based on the way you want to operate that business.

The Three Types of Email Marketers

Mr. Nice Guy

You’ve been on this list. It’s the marketer who barely sends you emails, sends a lot of free stuff, and barely promotes offers to you. And even when he promotes, he does it so softly that you’re not sure if it’s a good fit or not. But you trust this marketer because you know he truly cares for your well being and the growth of your business.

The Professional

This is the guy who treats his list like business. Mixing a strong combination of great free content/material with aggressive promotions based on a calendar. They usually know what they are emailing or promoting for the next 30-60 days or even 90 or more. It’s very structured, it’s mailed at the exact time for consistency, and as a customer you respect the marketer because he or she treats you well. You don’t want to leave the list because the content is satisfying and helps you grow your business.

Mr. Hammer Down, Baby

Just as the name says, you’re most likely on this type of list. It’s a natural progression for many newbie Email Marketers because it’s easy and the results are fairly instant. This type of email marketer usually has daily monetary goals to meet and will email you multiple times a day. Getting anything “free” is generally an opt into a pre-launch offer or a solo ad. The list response generally dies quick, so it’s important to constantly “get more subscribers.”
As I mentioned in my disclaimer, I’ve been each of these 3 marketers at one point in my career. Now that you know each one, I bet you’re on lists that follow these exact traits.
So, the question is…

Which one is right for you?

You see, each type has their ups and downs.  But as someone who’s been marketing for as long as I have, I’ve personally fallen into “The Professional” category. I’ll explain why I did and why you should strive to as well.
When you’re “Mr. Hammer Down, Baby” you create a business that relies heavily on email marketing and the affiliate offers that are available to you.
The big negative I see to this type of marketing? The lack of relationship you build.
Yes, it’s true, you’ll initially see a strong burst of commissions to your account. And it’s effective, but if you’re not consistently building your list, you’ll find that your subscribers will quickly lose faith in you. Your open and click rates will drop dramatically.
Not to mention, writing 2…3… emails a day or more to promote an offer can get quite tiring and stressful.
This type generally does not have a long term goal or vision because it’s based on a very short term mindset.
And then there is “Mr. Nice Guy.” The marketer who’s so nice to you, it’s hard not to open his or her message when they DO send an email. Sometimes you won’t hear for them for days or weeks… because there’s a level of guilt or shame to the marketer.
Now, as “Mr. Nice Guy”, the biggest problem I found was mindset.
Generally this type of marketer has a fear that IF they send an email a promotion that you will go running or hate them. They’re afraid to tell you that they are running a business. And end up defaulting to either giving away tons of value for free…or not emailing you at all.
The biggest negative of this type of marketer is simple – it’s very hard to run a successful business when you’re afraid of your customers. And the mindset is too passive.
So that leads us to…

The right move

“The Professional” is where I have fallen with my companies and is one of the best decisions I’ve made.
At Snaptactix, we have a marketing calendar and use it as a great resource. We work as a team to provide a strong mix of content/value with correctly positioned promotions that won’t make you cringe. We recommend email marketing tools that we use ourselves, like SendlaneClickPerfect and Email Tools.
As a team of Professionals, we respect your time, your holidays, and your inbox. We won’t flood you with emails, nor will we promote an offer that doesn’t fit our business morals and ethics.
For any marketer, becoming “The Professional” is a strong line to draw. You may lose some friends, but this strategy carries a long term growth plan that allows you to maximize your business potential.
Not to mention, it will cultivate respect in the tribe you create.
The only negative is the money that you COULD make is not as strong as “Mr. Hammer Down, Baby” in the short term. BUT the longevity of this style of list makes up for it all in the long run.
Now I’ve shared these types, not only to educate you but to show the mindset that you should have as an Email Marketer.
It’s not wrong to be any of the 3 types, but based on your business ethics and goals, you should strive to become and perfect the type you are.
So today, regardless if you’re a newbie with no list, or someone who’s been doing this for years, what type of marketer do YOU want to be…
