Every year there are more and more social channels for you to leverage while email list building. For someone new to the business it can be overwhelming. Since you only have so much time and money to budget. And time of course isn’t just money, it is gold when you are an entrepreneur.
Location, Location, Location
If you’re building a traditional business and opening up a retail location than it’s very important for you to understand the lease or purchase agreement. So that you don’t run into any nasty surprises which could cause major problems for you. No one is going to open a business in a location where they don’t feel they have some permanency. Setting a good foundation for growth and providing some control over your own destiny.
The problem with social channels is that you are at best renting space. You don’t own that channel and your lease agreement can change at any time – fundamentally affecting your revenue/income. Worse, they don’t even have to give you 60 days’ notice before they kick you to the curb.
Who Owns the Keys to Your Success?
What many new digital marketers don’t realize is that of all the social channels on the web, the only channel you actually have any real control over is email. You don’t have to pound your message into template holes which limit its effectiveness – you have control of the conversation. Yes, email marketing serviceproviders do have terms of service. If you violate those terms your account could be suspended. Those terms of service are at least built around long established laws and best practices so for most, as long as you follow the laws of the land, you have the kind of stability you may not find on other channels. One more thing. You get support and communication from email service providers so even if you don’t like what they may be saying, they are at least talking with you.
Don’t Build Your Castle on a Swamp
Now this doesn’t mean that you should put all your digital eggs in the email basket or any one basket. You need to budget time and resources towards the channels you think your clients are most active and receptive on. But it does mean that if you want to build your business on a sound foundation, you should be using email marketing as that base. Email list building was the first social media channel and it continues to be the strongest foundation and most effective channel for digital marketing.
